If you want to donate directly to the war effort, United24 is likely your best option. It’s early Wednesday. Wednesday is a shipping day whenever we have what to ship and the funds to cover so I took inventory of the donations on hand. The coats and boots are an echo of my call on Nextdoor a couple months ago. The volunteers told me they are still needed so I keep accepting them. I have just received the individual doses of meds for IFAKs from our partner, Eric Jones from J5 Rescue Supply LLC. Cant thank him and his company enough for everything they do. The formula and PediaSure came from a pediatric nurse of Ukrainian heritage who saw my posts on Nextdoor and decided to reach out. She said she can donate more, “but it’s so heavy, will you be able to ship it?” I don’t know. Without money donations I won’t. But these are all needed things in Ukraine. People from deoccupied territories got nothing left. Clothes, boots, and baby food is for them. Meds are needed on the front line. This packaging allows quick and easy access in the dire conditions. Also, I have received an email from the local private pharmacy. As you can see, they have prepared a load of children’s Tylenol and expecting seasonal meds for us from their vendors. I need financial support to move all this treasure to Ukraine. Please support our efforts. Choose a gift or two from our merch page. The two volunteers, Yulia and Tetyana, that I am working with are taking medical supplies to locations where no one else is going, like the medical stabilization station in Bakhmut. Bakhmut is one of the hottest points in the Ukrainian battlefield (read here the article in NY Times from November 27th about Bakhmut). Recently Yulia posted about the need for CT-6 traction splints. The CT-6 is a Leg Traction Splint designed for Pre Hospital Care and Patient transport, specifically in combat scenarios. It is primarily used on patients with mid-line femur fractures. The CT-6 helps relieve patient pain and prevents further damage to surrounding muscle and tissue while reducing the risk of death caused from severed arteries. On December 3rd, I started a fundraiser for 5 such splints (the minimal required quantity). The cost of one unit at the Rescue Supply store is roughly $148 and each unit weighs 1.1lbs so the shipping cost for 5 units comes to $38 so the total of $778 was needed. I have also reached out to the manufacturer, FareTec Inc, directly to see if they can help in any way. On December 5th, Ukraine’s Volunteer’s Day, I received a response from FareTec. They offered me a distributor’s price of $99 and recommended upgrading to the next gen, CT-7, for the price of CT-6. At that time we raised $600 and decided to order six splints. As of today, December 9th, the splints have been ordered. We have also received another donation that will cover the shipping to us and to Ukraine. We did this in 6 days. We could do it even faster if we had quicker access to the money so we are working now on padding the fund. Please support us. We will make every dollar go a long way. Yesterday Ukraine celebrated Volunteer’s Day and today is its Armed Forces Day. It’s not a coincidence that these two holidays go hand in hand since 2014, just like defenders and volunteers. A lot of people who volunteered in 2014-2015 joined the army at the offset of russian offensive on Ukraine. According to  Ukrainian Military Pages, in 2021 Ukrainian military counted 245K people. In 2022, up to 700,000 were mobilized for Armed Forces alone and as of March of 2022, 100,000 Ukrainians joined the Territorial Defense Forces, the country’s volunteer force organized to resist the russian invasion. More than 1 million people in Ukraine are now fighting against Mordor that is russia, through sweat, blood, and heartbreak; 80% of them – former civilians with regular jobs and comforts of modern lives. Can you imagine a day-to-day life in the tranches? “How could anyone ever know of the price paid by soldiers in terror, agony and bloodshed if they’d never been to places like Normandy, Bastogne or Haguenau?” – Webster (Voiceover), Band of Brothers, S1.Ep8: The Last Patrol. This is what I am thinking about today. Mariupol, Sievierodonetsk, Lysychansk, Pisky, Bakhmut, … .  How will I ever know? But I know the basics – the need for heat, equipment, meds, nutrition and I can keep showing up with everything I can. Here is a cool story of the rangefinder that was hand-delivered to Ukrainian front line all the way from New York: first, from one new yorker with Kharkiv roots to another; then in the carry-on of a lovely American young woman (also with Kharkiv roots) traveling from NYC to Chicago; then in the carry-on of an equally lovely childhood friend of mine traveling home from Chicago to Kharkiv via Lviv where it was picked up by a member of the TDF (Territorial Defense Forces) and handed off to one volunteer then another volunteer (originally from Kharkiv) and finally – to this handsome Ukrainian brave. Another fun fact is that in its previous life (in early 00’s) this rangefinder belonged to a rich russian tourist who brought it to America to hunt bears (as you do), didn’t find any bears and left home sans the instrument. Spoils of war.

I want to demo how the Mirror Stream makes a real difference for Kharkiv, Ukraine; where our edge is. In early October, one of the volunteers connected me with a surgeon at one of the Kharkiv hospitals to see if there was any medical equipment that I could find for them on dotmed platform. The surgeon told me that they have a really urgent need in <certain equipment>* and that it was challenging both to find it and to pay for it. They managed to find it but the sponsor disappeared. I couldn’t pay for it either, so I offered to write a letter on behalf of the hospital and sent it out to the organizations who might donate such equipment. Almost a month later, on November 8th, the surgeon wrote to me asking if there were any news on this equipment because 1. they pretty much ran out and 2. they couldn’t find it anywhere any longer. I didn’t have any news. We spoke at 8:42am. By the most extraordinary coincidence, at 10am on the same day I have received a notification of a $1000** donation from a former colleague who asked to remain anonymous. This sum would cover the most of the price of the equipment so at 11:18am I sent the first inquiries about the equipment – to the sales HQ of the manufacturer in Poland and North America. I thought maybe they would give the nonprofit a discount so that $1000 would be enough. Overall I ended up sending 20 emails by noon – to every company I could find online that dealt with the sought equipment. On the next day I received the first (and only, as it turned out) response (further research showed that these things were out of stock pretty much everywhere). The cost was $1400. They had no discounts but they would ship for free and wouldn’t charge sales tax. That was great but I was still $400 short and at no capacity to raise it. And that’s when another extraordinary thing happened. I have received a check in the mail for $2000*** as a donation to my nonprofit. This person is a relative of my friends, who took Ukrainian fight to heart. We haven’t met, I was simply recommended to him by my friends. On November 22nd, two weeks later, I received the equipment. When I sent a picture to the surgeon in Kharkiv, he couldn’t believe it: “It’s them!!! Thank you so much!!!”. I am adding a picture of the machine for which these mounting pads are. It’s a heart lung machine Sorin Stöckert S5****. Without these pads machine cannot be used. Without the machine, cardiopulmonary bypass surgeries cannot be performed. They arrived two days before my friend Kostya’s departure for Ukraine. He delivered them directly to the hospital on November 29th. While I am bragging, there is a point to it. Some fonds and volunteers have the reach and the pull to raise substantial resources and/or have a member with substantial resources. I am not them. Some, through their professional affiliations, have direct access to donors of the supplies. I am not them either. Some people have only their time and skills to donate. With this story I am trying to demo what skills we bring to the table. We are good at finding stuff (online or locally) that are hard to find (once I found a radiator for 2014 Chevy Spark EV that pretty much existed in only one instance online and delivering it to Ukraine within 10 days. I am good at writing inquiries (and doing it quickly) and establishing the relationship, the followthrough, and making time to do it all. I am good at getting shit done. Having a nonprofit, allows me to engage organizations that otherwise would not. Unfortunately, without financial resources getting shit done is not possible. Combat squadron of 13 military modular sleeping bags from the previous posts. Took 3 + hours to assemble. Quite a workout. Thinking of the backbreaking labor of our Ukrainian defenders on a daily basis on top of risking their lives, burying their brothers and sisters in arms , missing their loved ones. Blood, sweat, and tears. They didn’t ask for this. The uniform doesn’t make the loss of their lives more acceptable. Glory to the heroes of Ukraine! May you all come home.

The report we’ve all been waiting for. Mariya Petukhova and Sergey Rozhok and I spent two days at the ‘Uniting for Ukraine’ 2022 Ukrainian Village Fest, collecting money to support units of the Armed Forces of the Kharkiv region.
